In the Know: Cling On's Invasion
The folks at GBS Sticker World have once again gotten themselves into a sticky situation. But in the marketing game, sticky is good. It means that consumers are attracted to your ideas or product, maybe even getting a (static) charge out of it.
GBS newest sticky creation known as Cling Ons (no, not the Star Trek variety) is a unique material that temporarily adheres to just about any surface without leaving a gooey residue. What sets Cling Ons apart from the familiar static-vinyl window stickers is that it adheres to surfaces other than glass.
Ive been in the business 18 years and havent seen anything like this before, marvels Tim Gill, vice president of GBS Sticker World, a division of North Canton-based GBS Printed Products and Systems.
The company manufactures the plastic product in both a clear and a white form. The material is statically charged then attached to a specially designed backing that helps keep the charge and provides ease in handling, printing and cutting. The charge allows the material to stick to anything from walls to windows without damaging the surface. Cling Ons is designed to be disposable, although its full stick-life remains to be seen.
Although GBS ultimately wants to market Cling Ons to children for both educational and recreational uses, the business and marketing applications are diverse. They can be used in point-of-purchase for a holiday-type application, or a sale display, explains GBS Sticker World account manager Jennifer Hertle. They can be used for visual aids, on posters, charts, graphs or time lines. General Motors even uses Cling Ons on its car windows.
Now in the test-market stage, the response to Cling Ons has been ... well, electric.
