Southwest General Health Center in Middleburg Heights unveiled its $1.5 million da Vinci Surgical System in September, the first of its kind in Northeast Ohio. The da Vinci is a robotic system designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach, which means less pain, tissue damage, scarring and blood loss during and after a surgical procedure.
The system is designed to filter and translate the surgeon’s hand movements into more precise movements of the instruments. Using intuitive controls and three-dimensional displays, the surgeon can do more complicated procedures faster and more precisely, according to the hospital.
The da Vinci is used in numerous surgical procedures, but is most helpful for surgeons with the removal of the prostate or uterus, says Dr. David Turk, a urologist with the hospital system.
“Patients now stay in the hospital one day versus three to eight days after surgery,” he says. “They also have a much quicker return to normal.”
